This story deals with some very close friends of mine. First, there's Comet, a retired racing Greyhound, then Igloo, an Alaskan Malamute (very large and very strong), and the wise and experienced Rodrigo, a Spanish cat (don't ask). The three friends converge on the life and times of Rob and Jesse Brooks and their eight year old daughter, Patty, in the Queens neighborhood of Fresh Meadows in New York City. The area is urban, noisy and crowded with children, people of all sizes, colors and backgrounds and is a place of complete mystery to a four year old Greyhound whose life has been devoted to racing. Running is what he loves and running is what he does...but not quite fast enough to remain at the track. One day Comet finds himself plunked down in the middle of a brand new world. He's got a new family and a new place to live complete with new sounds and smells. How's a guy to get through all that? Why, with a mentor like Rodrigo de Santana, the Spanish cat. Rodrigo is an old-timer in the neighborhood who knows everyone and everything and he's joined in the task of educating Comet in by Igloo, the gentle giant.
